Karl Broadie was a significant voice in the country music community.
Two voices in fact.
There was the one that we heard and responded to in the many lyrical, honest, beautiful, thought-provoking and passionate songs he leaves as a lasting legacy.
Then there was the other no less passionate voice in which he spoke to his friends, colleagues and just about anyone who’d listen – about life, love, beliefs, politics …. and of course his passion for songwriting. As the night lengthened and the brogue thickened, the detail may have become harder to understand, but somehow it didn’t matter. It had a music all its own.
We in the CMAA were blessed to have Karl involved as songwriter in residence and last year as group leader in the annual Academy of Country Music program.
It’s hard to believe that it was only in January that we all sat around after an exciting Graduation Concert – featuring many of the songs Karl helped the students write, planning for next year.
Karl’s group of students at the Academy were so taken with their experience of working with him for two weeks that they took to calling themselves ‘Team Karl’. He regarded the T-shirt they presented to him as one of the best gifts he’d ever received.
His sad passing will obviously affect those closest to him but, so so many more will feel the loss of a friend they found through his music.
Rest in peace mate. Today we’re all members of Team Karl.
